Most media texts target a range of different audience. How true is this for your chosen texts?

Most media texts target a range of different audience. How true is this for your chosen texts?

When analysing the Series Lost especially S1E2 Pilot part 2. We can tell that this Series defiantly attracts different ranges of audience this is due to the way in which its produced by technical conventions and narrative structures , I will be discussing three techniques these are ; Use of enigma codes , Narrative Structure and it’s Hybrid genre.

Firstly I will talk about the amount of enigma codes which are used through this episode to give a mainstream audience the enigma codes to question when the episode plays . Such as the scene with the Polar bear we are instantly given an enigma code as to why the animal is out of its natural habitat and in a completely binary opposition from one extreme to another. Another enigma code is given at the start of the series when we see a pair of handcuffs on the floor which is where we meet Michael where he picks up the handcuff’s and the shot type is changed to a close up with shallow focus signifying the item giving the audience enigma codes as to why its there? Who do they belong to ? Lost uses so many enigma codes throughout this series this is because they want to keep their audience interested at all times. Considering this Series was a T.V show they needed to included at least 4-5 enigma codes too keep there audience hanging and won’t be answered till the next episode if not later in the series. As this is a series we know that Enigma codes play a huge role for this Series and won’t give the answer to them this is so they keep there watches interested in the show and wait till the end to unravel this story of what they are introduced to.

Lost uses the Todorov narrative theory in this episode as we are given an equilibrium of landing safely and being alive sunbathing on the beech waiting for a rescuer to get them. Which is then followed by a Disequilibrium of finding a pair of handcuff’s which instantly drops the mood with an audience with accompanied with score music to add to the drama to tell the mainstream watches how they should feel when they are found. We are then given a new equilibrium of the group going on a quest finding a way to fix the transmitter to work so they can receive help. This episode doesn’t finish a  complete circle of Todorov’s theory due to being a series they need to keep the audience on a cliff hanger. Why ? The audience like this theory and likes to watch things in chronological order as we can understand and enjoy the episode.

Lost falls into the depth of a hybrid genre as what is shown is Post Modern as they are bringing different genre’s into the Series  to make one especially this episode because what we see is Action mixed with Fantasy genre stylistic genre conventions because by producing a new genre to capture an audiences attention by mixing the two together they can make something new for the audience to enjoy. We can see this in this episode as they show Action conventions such as special effects as we see the plane which is board with the cast. Where we are introduced to Charlie a drug addict who takes his belt of to go to the rest room to take illegal drugs as staff get irate (accompanied with score to build the audience tension levels) and ask Charlie to come out where the plain spits into two as we see the plane and passengers fly out into the air. We are given the Fantasy genre conventions through the group going on a quest and getting to the top of the mountain to receive signal for the transmitter to work to gain help as the two are mixed together we assume that due to the Fantasy conventions we just believe everything that’s going on without questioning it which gives the audience escapism.

To conclude I believe that the text Lost with reference to S1E2 The Plane part 2 that this media definitely attracts different audience this is by use of technical and narrative techniques used to produce a new Hybrid to attract ranges of audiences because this will attract different audiences with the use of mixing genre and using Todorov’s theory makes it easy for the audience to like , believe and understand.

What Action Conventions Lie In The Series Lost?

LOST:
What Action conventions lie in the series lost?

-       At the start of the scene we see a plane with passengers aboard  when we are introduced to Charlie a drug taking addict who hides away in the toilet whilst he takes an illegal substance.  The score builds up as airline crew gets irate about the situation and asks him to leave during this moment the planes power is lost and begins to fall. Half the plane has broken off using special effects  to show the plane and  passengers for fall into the sky. High alarm bells ring when oxygen masks fall increasing the tension.

-       This episode shows a high demand of enigma codes proving that this series is  for a mainstream audience as we are constantly guessing what will happened why it happened. Such as  when we see a pair of handcuffs on the floor with a  close up shallow focused shot ,this is too show the importance of this item giving narrative clue’s to the mainstream audience accompanied with score to give direction to there emotion. Also in this episode we are shown a polar bear out of its habitat this instantly throws enigma codes to the audience as to why a polar bear is there?  Lost uses a gathering of enigma codes as they will use 4 to 5 different enigma codes as they have to consider ad breaks this keeps the audience in tension to watch.

-       We see a love interest between Jin and Sun who are a married couple who although doesn’t show a loving connection but are married due to the cultural issues and nationality issues we can tell that there is a relationship but it is a negative view. As Jin has power over Sun in certain scenes as he tells her to do her top button up showing a controlling husband.

-       In this episode we see one chase scene which is developed by score and medium shot of the leaves where the noise of the polar bear comes from where we see movement. The group then run away from the noise where Soya stays and pulls his gun out to shot the animal. We see a chase between pray and predators in this episode.

Killing Joke

Killing Joke Jaz Coleman found in Western Sahara deserts after Killing Joke post on there site that they was cancelling there tour with The Cult or The Mission because 'There Songs Suck' was posted on the bands site. This post was made just before Coleman was not to be found anywhere. He claims that the band knew where he was and he didn't make the post. Killing Joke then felt it was impossible to do the tour as tensions would hold between the band to who said the rumour posted by Killing Joke ( Jaz Coleman). Coleman was out in the Sahara writing a new solo album to release, book and TV score however he may have been doing this at the time the band released a three-disc set of dub remixes. To my eye this would appear as an apologie to there fans for cancelling. Killing Joke had to then cancel a gig in London Metropolis Studios(08/08/12)which was meant to be recorded and released as a DVD .The band charged extortionate prices for there fans to come and be on the DVD which was then cancelled as the tour was too.

Negative Representation Of Manchester : Shameless

Shameless is such a bad representation of Manchester and the people who live there. If we enter the city centre of Manchester the architectural is amazing, however yes the suburbs are grotty however Shameless seem to wants to show Manchester in this negative view which effects the people who live in Manchester as the moment you ask have you been there people will say 'Er no have you seen it' just on watching Shameless. The way in which Shameless is directed give the area a negative representative of being working class and having a handicap of  either an alcoholic , whore or gang member. Although this program was awarded with best drama series at the BAFTA awards and was then sold onto America for them to make a laughing stock out of an area which has enough bad media evolving them without having a program broadcasted showing how bad the area is or isn't. I think the fact of opening a series with an alcoholic shouting  at the viewer instantly gives the region a bad name.

Advertising

Advertising is all about gaining an audiences attention and making them want or need the product your trying to sell. There are different types of advertising and also the values in constructing an advert , adverts have a budget in which they need to stick to. Many advertisers will try and grab you straight away.

For instance this advert for No5 Channel as we can see we have a slim woman in an expensive dress on a high class train. The advertisers have placed this woman on the left hand side of the train staring out of the window smiling , she is lit up by artificial lighting to gain our eyes attention to the dominant character. This advert is a simplistic advert created with a thin attractive female and nice clothing and surroundings by putting the bottle at the bottom right with No5 in the top right it separates the model and the perfume but we will always associate the product with the scenario. To make the audience believe that if they wear this perfume they will then become an attractive woman who has wealth due to a perfume.

Representation In The Youth Today:

Youth of today are being neglected by the media , creating stories and new ways in gaining an audience however by doing this they are changing the public's view on the youth. For instance when people see a male aged 16 in an Adidas tracksuit they will prejudge this young male because of the media and think of him as a "YOB" or "LOOTERS" as media have been giving the youth this negative name. Yes some may do this and may be a yob or a looter but the majority of the youth are in school and learning and helping the community. Once association that has been helping the youth get back there name is called "The Challenge" and the in courage youth not to judge and go out and help there community to gain their rightful name. In the media we will only see the negative stories in any headline such as " Do you know Asda's looters? ". Instead of " Youth saves OAP from hit and run" this is because the media knows that the bad or lieing stories sell.

Even in Sponge Bob Square Pants a child's TV show are showing that the media is all lies. Forcing SpongeBob into writing false stories so Mr Krabs gains money. This showing that they know what they are doing and they are showing it to young children this episode is called 'The Krabby Kronicles' Here are some images showing SpongeBob's actual story and what Mr Krabs Changes this into.

From an innocent story telling the truth to a made up lie. Which is what the media is doing today because they know this will gain them them more money and more readers/watchers.
